Omega Foundation has launched an initiative aimed at providing vocational and technical training to orphans and vulnerable children who come from child-headed homes. The project will support these young bread winners in acquiring market-driven skills that will enable them to secure employment in local industries and businesses, to enable them uplift their families economically.
Kisumu, Homabay and Siaya counties have over 22,000 child-headed homes. Children are forced to head homes prematurely mainly as a result of the AIDS scourge which has unfortunately led to orphaned children where older siblings have to assume parental responsibilities despite their tender age. In other significant cases, parents are bedridden and hence unable to exercise their family obligations. This further compounds the problem for the under-age “child-parent” who now has to take care of his/her parents in addition to siblings.
Businesses in the three counties experience a lack of critical skills such as qualified plumbers, electricians, masons, carpenters and mechanics. As a result, this greatly impedes business potential, causing them to operate below optimum level. With the advent of devolution and the growth opportunity this presents, there is need to cultivate market-driven skills in order to ensure sufficient supply of these much needed skills to the numerous businesses in Kisumu, Homa-Bay, and Siaya.
This project enables youth between the ages of 17-20 to acquire market-based skills that will turn them into a critical employee pool for various businesses and industries in the region. Our target is to train an initial 50 candidates in various courses including motor vehicle mechanics, catering, electrical engineering, building masonry, carpentry, fashion design and others. These beneficiaries will also receive mentorship and life skills training as well as coaching on entrepreneurship to prepare them for self-employment opportunities.
By donating to the uplift-a-child-headed household campaign, you can help economically empower a family by equipping the underage breadwinner with the skills they require to improve their livelihoods. The overall goal is to enable these families gain self-sufficiency while providing the much needed skills for businesses in Kisumu to operate effectively.
Help change a child’s future today by donating here or directly via M-Pesa paybill no. 877077.
